Pigeons & Peacocks: Fashion & Feminism

Feminism is at an interesting point, with new tenets of popular culture such as selfies and celebrity, raising questions about not only what it is to be a feminist, but how women are represented by the media, fashion, music and film industries. From Beyonce’s feminist manifesto, to Taylor Swift calling on her power girl posse for her latest video Bad Blood; and Lena Dunham and Tavi Gevenson’s rise as leftfield feminist icons, feminism is on the agenda.

And the fashion industry has joined the ranks, evident in Karl Lagerfield’s controversial feminist catwalk protest, seen by some as a trivialisation of feminism, but on the world stage nevertheless. Fashion perhaps brings with it the most controversy out of any industry, as the press and public speculate about its involvement in breeding a generation of selfie slaves, aspiring to size zero and accepting the objectification of women.
